Emmeline Pankhurst was herself arrested several times, living up to her movement's motto 'Deeds not words'. Once she was held after calling on people to "rush the House of Commons" for the cause.

Also active in the suffragette movement were her daughters Sylvia and Christabel, who at one stage personally orchestrated a series of arson attacks.
