Before Friday the last time Labour lost a by-election was to the Scottish National Party in Glasgow Govan in 1988. But the SNP has a more famous by-election scalp to its name.

In 1967 Winnie Ewing overturned a 16,000 Labour majority, to become only the second SNP MP.

Her victory established the party as a serious force in Scottish politics.
