As the Daily Mirror's political editor, Campbell first advised Labour leader Neil Kinnock. Labour - buoyed with hopes of victory - was savaged in the 1992 general election.

Resigning from Fleet Street in 1994 to help Tony Blair improve Labour's election prospects, Campbell's efforts paid off when the Tories were swept from office in 1997.
