Another character to survive from the novel is Kurtz's enthusiastic disciple, the Russian trader – who is transformed into a photojournalist in the film, played by Dennis Hopper.

Hopper tries to justify the brutal actions of Kurtz – which include beheading his enemies. "The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet-warrior ... I'm a little man, he's a great man."
