Was Conrad a critic?

Coppola’s film is seen as an indictment of US military adventures abroad – particularly the antics of Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall, left), who destroys an enemy village so he can surf its beach.

However, UK readers in 1902 may not have seen Conrad’s novel as a similar attack on British colonialism. His book is set in a Belgian colony and was interpreted as critical of only rogue colonists.
