Whereas cigarette advertising on TV was banned in the UK in 1965, cigars commercials continued to be screened until 1991.

Hamlet chose to show users of its product as hapless losers, seeking solace in a smoke. One 1987 ad had a man unable to use a simple "photo booth".

Unlike Strand’s lonely man, Hamlet man – perhaps helped by Bach’s Air on a G String – proved popular with consumers.
