British sailors once enjoyed duty free tobacco, from which they could "cut" a pipeful. Smoking was linked to maintaining morale during war and families were encouraged to send cigarettes to their fighting men.

Asked what his troops needed to win World War I, US General John Pershing replied: "Tobacco as much as bullets."

Hitler frowned on smoking, and cut rations for his soldiers.
