Horsehair wigs are meant to offer anonymity and instil respect for the law. But the garb is also seen as intimidating to outsiders.

This is the current attire of a high court judge, a design which meets the approval of Christopher Breward, professor of historical studies at London College of Fashion. "There's a need to retain a confidence in the hierarchies, so the wig is important."
