The total cost of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link was estimated to be £5.2bn, in 1997 prices. At least £1.8bn of this is paid for directly by the tax payer.

Section one of the project, to be opened to the public later this month, was produced on time and to budget, costing £1.9bn.

Section two, currently half-built, is expected to cost £3.3bn.
