"Our worst enemies in the camps were hunger – we ate just thin soup and were always hungry – and the beatings from the kapos. The kapos had terrible tempers. They were from civilian prisons and were put in charge of 1,000 men and told they could do what they liked with us. They made every minute a misery. For the least thing they beat you."
