"They were gassed and their bodies burned on an open field. That’s where my wife and child ended. The ashes were ground up and dug like sand into the earth, so no one could tell how many people were murdered. When I walked the field in 2000, I saw what I thought was cement. It was ashes that had come through the grass. My hand went down and came up with these - which I think are fingernails."
