The fragmentary remains of a human ancestor called Eoanthropus dawsoni, found during 1911-1915 at Piltdown, Sussex, were thought to hold the key to our evolutionary past.

The creature was said to be a “missing link” between humans and apes, with all the features speculated to be in such an animal, including a large braincase and ape-like jaw.
