In Pictures: Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster
Preparing for re-entry

Astronauts use Columbia's manoeuvring rockets located in the nose and tail to position the shuttle into the correct angle to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere.

The de-orbit burn to take Columbia home begins at 0815 EST (1315 GMT).

There are no weather issues on Earth to complicate the final approach.
