William Kepner, Albert Stevens and Orvil Anderson reach 60,613 ft (18,475 m).

They were the first human beings to report seeing the curvature of the Earth with their own eyes. They were lucky to survive their mission.

They had to parachute to safety when their hydrogen balloon, Explorer 1, ripped apart.
