Originally intended for use by the military and emergency services, cars leaving Wolfsburg began to find an avid civilian market and exports boomed.

By 1951, the car was available in 29 countries. Known as the Kaefer in Germany, the French got the bug for the Coccinelle (ladybird), the Brazilians bought the Fusca, and Italians the Maggiolino.
