Austrian Ferdinand Porsche (1875-1951) had been toying with the idea of a small, cheap car before the Nazis came to power, but he found Hitler to be an enthusiastic supporter for a "people’s car".

This is a 1935 prototype of the Volkswagen, a car supposed to bring "joy" to the German population by giving them the mobility few had enjoyed before.
