While the air has cleared, the effect of past smogs can still be glimpsed today. With its landmarks cloaked in soot, London's contrast of light and dark has long had a chiaroscuro beauty - until the clean-up crews revealed white and cream stone under the grime. Hence St Paul's two-tone walls during its restoration - blackened below, while the cleaned upper levels gleam in the sunlight.
