Savimbi killed

Februrary: Jonas Savimbi, leader of Angola’s rebel Unita movement, is killed by government troops. This quickly led to the end of a 27-year war. Many thousands of Unita fighters arrived in demobilisation camps and handed in their weapons. During the years of war, farmers were prevented from planting crops and Angola now faces the prospect of mass starvation.
