The UN presence in Port-au-Prince is very visible. Armed soldiers of several nationalities can be seen patrolling the streets of the major cities in Haiti. The UN stabilisation mission in Haiti in late 2004, as the country spiralled into anarchy. President Jean Bertrand Aristide had fled the country in February of that year after armed riots and violent gangs controlled large parts of the city.
