In pictures: Prince Charles turns 60

Making tradition modern

The prince took his green principles a step further to design Poundbury – an eco-friendly model village and a backlash against modern architecture. It has faced some criticism - in 2006, the mayor of nearby Dorchester, Robin Potter, said later phases of the development had drifted away from the original ideals. Nevertheless, it has provided inspiration for other urban planners.

The Prince also runs the Foundation for the Built Environment, training young apprentices in traditional skills.
