In pictures: British summer 'staycation'


 

The first huts were built in the 1920s as shelters for local fishermen. Their popularity as a recreational space boomed after World War II and an increasing number were built along the rugged coastline.

Hilda Pepperell, 87, was born and raised in Portland, where she ran a fish and chip shop. Her son Alan makes the journey from Surrey every few weeks to take her to their hut, where they relax and watch the world go by.
