In pictures: Mapping in action

Mapped to order

MapAction deploys small teams of volunteers GPS receivers in hand, to do on-the-ground mapping in the wake of natural disasters.

"We tend to forget living in countries which have been mapped to a high level of detail that in many parts of the world, base mapping simply does not exist or isn't available quickly and easily," says Nigel Woof, MapAction’s operations director.

"For example, in Burma, the best mappping were able to get hold of was British survey mapping from the 1940s."
