In the south of the country, Stefan meets farmers who grow corn on collective farms. Corn has been cultivated in the state of Chiapas for 5,000 years.

But in January 1994, traditional farming became threatened when a Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) with the United States and Canada came into effect.

In preparation for the deal, the Mexican government allowed individual ownership and privatised communal land.
