In pictures: Holocaust survivors exhibition
National symbol

This caricature, known as Srulik, was created in 1952 by Holocaust survivor Kariel Gardosh.

It came to symbolise the young state and was chosen as the official icon on Israel's 10th anniversary.

It has since been used in a vast range of merchandise, from dolls to keyrings to logos on clothes.

Although Israeli society has undergone large transformations since its start, Srulik's image remains etched into the Israeli collective memory.
