In pictures: Holocaust survivors exhibition

The experience of Holocaust survivors who made it to Palestine continued to be one of struggling to survive.

Many joined the pre-state armed forces making up about half of the Jewish fighting force during the war that preceded the establishment of Israel. About a third of the Jews who died in the war were Holocaust survivors.

This ammunition belt was worn by Holocaust survivor Eleazar Shafrir, who fought in the war in the Palmach – a forerunner of the Israel Defense Forces.
