When survivors arrived in Palestine between 1945 and 1948, the land was still under British Mandatory control, and very few could obtain entry certificates.

About 50,000 immigrants were deported to detainment camps in Cyprus.

This sandstone inkstand, in the shape of an open book with a ship sailing from Cyprus to the "Land of Israel", was carved by a Holocaust survivor in a Cypriot detainment camp.
