In pictures: Egypt's hidden treasures
Al-Khalawati Mosque, Cairo

Hanging on by a thread to the side of a hill overlooking Cairo, is the ruined mosque and tomb of Shahin al-Khalawati.

Shahin was a pious man. He built the mosque in 1538 and stayed there until his death thirty years later, never descending to the hubbub of Cairo below.
