Non-sectarian alliance

The mainly Sunni Iraqi Awakening movement, formed by tribal leaders to eject al-Qaeda from their communities, has helped restore calm to former flashpoints across the country.

Sunni Awakening leader in Baghdad's Fadil neighbourhood, Khaled al-Qaisi (right) joins hands with Faris Abdel Hassan, the Shia Awakening leader from the Abu Saifain community, to celebrate the removal of a "peace line" - a concrete wall between their two districts.
