In pictures: Racecourse of the past and the future
Stockton

Stockton, near Middlesbrough, had hosted racing since 1724 at three different sites. At one point racing became so popular that every August factories closed down during Stockton Race Week. But its demise began after the war when the races had to compete with other attractions, such as cinema and TV. Falling attendances forced its closure in June 1981. Suniti was the last winner.
