Nearly all of these bats die near the mouth of the cave or mine they have flown out of. Scientists speculate that they may be waking up because they are hungry and dehydrated.

Perhaps the disease causes their body temperature to rise during hibernation - depleting their resources.

Or perhaps the symptoms force them out of slumber too early and that uses up valuable energy.
