In pictures: Flower mosaics

Each May, the small central Italian town of Acquapendente celebrates freedom with a festival - known as Pugnaloni - in which local people create huge flower mosaics. These consist of wooden canvasses covered exclusively with flower petals and other plant material.

Much like in nearby Siena and its Palio horse race, the town is divided into teams, which compete for a symbolic prize awarded to the best mosaic.
