"It's cold, we don't have enough to eat, and there's no work," says Salif Bance, 38, from Burkina Faso. "Everything we earn we use to buy food."
Salif says he has had about three weeks of work in three months. He is one of the few immigrants here with valid papers, having worked in a factory near Milan before making the journey south.
"I need to renew my permit now but I have no contract and no pay packet, so I don't know how I'm going to manage," he says.
