But there is good news: the strength of the euro and weakness of the Brazilian Real means Irish wages now buy one-third more than a few months ago.
"Four years ago it was a lot easier to send money and to find a job," says Miro Pires, who sends up to 1,000 euros home every 40 days.
"Now I wait until the exchange rate reaches at least three euros before I send anything. Although it's harder now, I'm going to wait at least another year before going back. The situation is difficult everywhere."
