Pound rate

While the euro initially fell against the pound, it has soared over the past few months, on the perception that the UK may suffer a worse recession than the eurozone.

It has risen to be worth as much as 98 pence on the foreign exchange markets, with many analysts predicting it is on the way to being worth more than £1.

Many bureaux de change are already giving less than one euro to the pound.
