In pictures: A decade of the euro

New members

Slovakia became the 16th member state to embrace the euro on 1 January 2009.

Slovenia had joined in January 2007, while Cyprus and Malta both joined in January 2008.

Some smaller territories and countries that are not members of the European Union, such as Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican also use the euro, and some of them are even allowed to design their own coins.
