In pictures: A decade of the euro

New coins

Each country had to have the same design on the face of the coin that showed the value, but were allowed to have their own designs on the other side.

Many pictures on the reverse of one euro coins feature monarchs, although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart appears on Austrian coins.

Bird life is also popular, with flying swans (Finland), an owl (Greece) and an eagle (Germany) all appearing.
