		Used in shops The currency was adopted by the 300 million citizens of the first 12 countries in January 2002. Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, France, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain were the founder members. Each abandoned its own currency to adopt the euro.
