Building a boat is a communal activity. It is not only time-consuming but also costly.

Nevertheless, owner Syapen Koten explains that he was determined his family should build a traditional boat as it is essential for catching flying fish.

But knowledge of traditional skills is passing away. His son, Syamen Manidong, says he is honoured to take part in the ritual - but also embarrassed, as he does not know how to build a boat himself.
