In Kano’s Kurmi market, there is a whole section dedicated to the sale of what most people would consider to be rubbish.

Household waste is brought by the young boys who scavenge over rubbish tips. It is sorted and sold here.

It’s a kind of recycling, but driven by poverty rather than the ideal of a cleaner environment.

The market itself is thought to be over 1,000 years old. Some of the cells where slaves were once traded now hold trinket stalls.
