Building boom

Before September 2002 there were 24,000 civil servants in the north. The committee in charge of bringing back government administration says at least 70% have now returned.

Yet most government buildings were looted and abandoned and their arrival has put pressure on the local housing market.

“There’s a boom here, ever since the peace flame,” local estate agent Issoufou Coulibaly says.

“People are starting to come back to rent houses and they start to live well here.”
