In pictures: Ivory Coast’s plush, empty capital


Presidential memorial

Ivory Coast's first president actually moved the capital to Yamoussoukro in 1983, but the government remained in Abidjan.

Grand projects got under way in Yamoussoukro but they seemed designed more as a memorial to the then president than to making the new capital a reality.

The pictured Houphouet-Boigny Foundation opened its doors 1989 with the mission to further peace in the world.
