In pictures: Food crisis in Northern Nigeria

Mohammed’s home village of Dan Inna, near the town of Kazaure north of Kano, is 3km from the tarmac road.

It is an area where the desert is gradually encroaching.

The only water for farming is the three months of unreliable rain, due to start soon.

Mohammed’s grandfather Yakub said that Mohammed was one of 20 of his grandchildren sent out to the city this year.

He lifted the lid on an empty grain store: “We are having to do menial jobs to eat."
