Danger

An armed policeman watches over de-miner Jean Ntirandekura as he checks the area.

Unexploded mines are not the only danger - the Bururi province is notorious for rebels and armed bandits. De-mining convoys are at risk of attack.

The unpredictable security situation, together with the challenge of working on rough, mountainous terrain, has slowed the process down.

Burundi was supposed to be mine-free by April - it is now more likely to be September 2008.
