Photo journal: De-mining Burundi
'Mine-free'

Burundi is due to become the first mine-affected country in the world to be declared free from landmines.

It is emerging from 13 years of civil war in which an estimated 300,000 people lost their lives.

Peace is now within sight. Leaders of the last active rebel group, the FNL (the National Liberation Forces), recently returned to the country for peace talks.

The de-mining operation is central to Burundi's reconstruction effort.
