Cans go to Wales

The cans are taken about 200 miles away to a site in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, run by the US-based AMG company.

The plant deals with “hundreds of tons a week” of cans from dozens of councils, says site manager Phil Kultschar.

Most cans are either aluminium or steel, with the steel often having a tin lining.

AMG separates the metals - the steel with a magnet, and the aluminium by a process “like a magnet in reverse" – and they are shredded and baled.
