The clothes are collected for Oxfam by Soex, a German multi-national which collects about 2,000 tonnes a year of fabric in the UK.
They are taken by truck to one of its recycling plants abroad, for instance in Poland, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria or Hungary, says spokesman Raffy Kassardjian.
Clothes in good enough condition go to Africa and elsewhere for retail.
Others are separated into fibres for items such as cleaning wipes, car hardfelts or relief blankets.
