The Nadar family moved into this new flat last year. The slum development authority have a system in place which says developers can build new flats on Dharavi land for wealthy Mumbaikers but must in turn build flats for the local slum residents.

Mr Nadar, a driver, who has lived in Dharavi for 25 years, is overjoyed by his new home. They have running water and a lavatory.

"Before this we lived next to the gutter, now it's all so clean, the children are very happy," he says.
