So how do the designers of such grand statements live themselves?

This is his family home, Casa das Canoas, built in 1950 and today a place of pilgrimage for design obsessives. Made largely of glass, it is built around a jutting rock Niemeyer left in situ on the site.

"It's the type of 1950s villas that any designer would drool over," says architecture critic Jonathan Glancey, presenter of Radio 4's 100 Years in Concrete.
