In pictures: The generations claim
South Atlantic settlers

Argentina and Britain will never agree on their interpretations of Falkland Islands history.

Argentina says it was ousted from Las Malvinas, the territory it inherited from Spain. Britain says it has had possession for more than 150 years and that its residents have a right to self-determination.

Whatever one's view, the result is that not long after Britain's colonisation in 1833 came settlers who stayed. Hundreds still live there who can trace their ancestors back to the original few.
