There are currently 80 licensed vessels fishing within the zone. Money is also made from those that come in to offload catches into refrigerated ships.
A new system is being phased in to control stocks, with limits set on numbers of fishing days.
But it is not all good news – there are concerns over reports of brutality and lack of safety on some vessels. One Taiwanese squid jigger had its licence revoked last month after 12 men jumped ship – two drowning – to escape conditions on board.
